Success Stories from TOMA & COE Writers’ Retreats

Two years ago, TOMA & COE launched their Writers’ Retreat programme, bringing together emerging writers from around the world under the guidance of writers and mentors Joanna Quinn and Manni Coe.

The retreats were designed to do more than simply provide writing workshops. The goal was to create space for reflection, development, and professional progress, helping writers reconnect with their ideas, structure their manuscripts, and develop confidence in their voice.

The first retreat took place at the La Fructosa hotel in Gaucín during autumn 2024. Over five days, participants worked intensively on their writing projects while taking inspiration from the surrounding environment and group discussions. Writers came from different countries and professional backgrounds, but shared a common goal: to make meaningful progress on their manuscripts.

One of the most important aspects of the retreat was the commitment to continued support after the event ended. Participants formed a WhatsApp group to share updates, discuss challenges, and celebrate milestones. That group remains active today, reflecting the collaborative spirit that the retreats aim to foster.

The real measure of success for any creative development programme is what happens afterwards.

Success story #1

Misty Coy Snyder, a success story from the TOMA & COE writers retreats

For TOMA & COE, that success became clear when news arrived that one of the retreat attendees had secured her first book deal.

Misty Coy Snyder is a mother of two young boys. When her youngest son was born with Down Syndrome, she experienced a profound shift in perspective. Rather than focusing on uncertainty, she chose to focus on advocacy, celebration, and education. She later founded Happiness is Down Syndrome, an advocacy and support group that provides information and community support for families affected by Down Syndrome.

Misty is driven by a strong commitment to justice and equal opportunities. Her advocacy work has now led to her first book being commissioned by Wiley Publishing, Jossey-Bass. The book will include resources for families, personal experiences, and guidance for friends and relatives who want to better understand and support people with Down Syndrome.

This publication is particularly meaningful because it adds another informed voice to the ongoing conversation around disability, inclusion, and family support networks.

Success Story #2

Retreat Writers

Another success from the retreats is a student who has secured a place on the highly competitive Creative Writing course at the University of East Anglia, a programme widely known for developing new literary talent. Places on this course are difficult to obtain, making this achievement particularly significant for the writer and for the retreat’s teaching programme.

These achievements demonstrate the practical impact of structured creative development combined with mentorship, peer support, and dedicated writing time.

TOMA & COE Writers’ Retreat in Dorset is sold out and begins on 16th March. The next retreat in Andalucia will take place on 21st September. Our retreats continue to attract writers who want to make real progress on their manuscripts in supportive, focused environments.

For anyone considering joining us, early booking is recommended as places fill quickly.
