Not actually a country, but actually a British Overseas Territory, Gibraltar is about far more than just The Rock. Although, that’s pretty spectacular too, and at odds with its sudden right angle to the horizontal plane of surrounding coastline. Aficionados of military history make a trip there a must. A British fortress since the 18th century, and its strategic location, have marked Gibraltar with a firm place in the annals of military history. Evidence of this lies beneath too – there are, in fact, more underground tunnels than roads in Gibraltar. On a lighter note, choose to monkey around with the protected tail-less Macaques – the only wild monkey population in Europe – or watch the dolphins at play, wild and free in the straits. Shopping is, of course, tax free, always a pleasure, before a lazy afternoon at the beach, of which there are six in Gibraltar, four of them sandy. To end the day, a leisurely dinner – choose from British or international cuisine – followed by a drive to the Upper Rock. The sight of the sun setting across two continents is a pretty spectacular ending to any trip.
