Archidona & Antequera: Private Tour into the Heart of Andalucía
Discover the hilltop towns of Archidona and Antequera, bursting with history and tradition
Archidona & Antequera: Private Tour into the Heart of Andalucía
An hour from the coast lies a different Andalucía. Inland, where the olive groves roll to the horizon and the white towns sit on their hilltops as they have for centuries, you find the Spain that most visitors on the Costa del Sol never reach.
This private guided day tour takes in Archidona and Antequera, two towns separated by the legendary Lover’s Rock and connected by a history that spans the Moorish occupation, the Christian Reconquista and everything in between.
Lunch is at a restaurant that has dedicated itself to reviving the lost recipes of rural Andalucía. It is one of TOMA & COE’s best-kept secrets.

Tour Summary
Archidona and Antequera – Reconquered by the Christians in different generations, their combined histories are intertwined with the sagas, adventures, anecdotes and complicated allegiances of the Catholic Re-Conquest.
The tour takes in both towns ad the beautiful scenery between them as you uncover some of rural Andalucia’s best-kept secrets.
Archidona is the quieter of the two: entirely authentic, refreshingly untouched by tourism. On the hilltop above the town sits one of Andalucía’s oldest surviving Moorish mosques, now a chapel dedicated to the town’s patroness, Our Lady of Grace. The views from the summit are extraordinary. Below, the Plaza Ochavada, one of the most unusual town squares in Spain, is built on a perfect octagon with each side decorated differently.
From Archidona, the route passes La Peña de los Enamorados, the Lover’s Rock, with its own poignant legend, before arriving in Antequera. This is a monumental town: its Menga and Viera dolmens, some of the oldest megalithic structures in Europe, have UNESCO World Heritage status. The Old Town is beautiful, the churches extraordinary in number, and the whole place alive and unpretentious.
Here we can enjoy a wonderful lunch in a restaurant dedicated to reviving lost recipes of rural Andalucia after enjoying a gentle walking tour of the beautiful Old Town.

Frequently Asked Questions
Antequera is known as the Heart of Andalucía, a monumental inland town with exceptional historical depth. Its Menga, Viera and El Romeral dolmens, dating back over 5,000 years, are UNESCO World Heritage sites and among the oldest megalithic structures in Europe. The town also has a Moorish fortress, dozens of baroque churches, and a landscape that includes the extraordinary limestone formations of El Torcal. Despite all this, Antequera remains off the main tourist trail.
Archidona is a small hilltop town in Málaga province, around 55km north-east of Málaga city and about 15km from Antequera. It sits at 666 metres above sea level and offers a completely authentic slice of Andalucian life. Its most famous landmarks are the octagonal Plaza Ochavada, one of the most architecturally distinctive town squares in Spain, and the Santuario de la Virgen de Gracia, a hilltop chapel built on the site of one of Andalucía’s oldest surviving Moorish mosques. The views from the sanctuary across the Málaga countryside are exceptional.
La Peña de los Enamorados, the Lover’s Rock, is a distinctive rocky outcrop near Antequera whose silhouette resembles a sleeping face. It is the subject of a well-known legend in which a Christian knight and a Moorish princess, forbidden to be together, threw themselves from its peak rather than be separated. The rock is visible from the road between Archidona and Antequera and is one of the most evocative landmarks of inland Málaga.
Absolutely. Antequera is under an hour from Málaga city and easily reachable from most of the Costa del Sol. It offers a depth of history and culture — UNESCO dolmens, Moorish and baroque architecture, exceptional local food — that is difficult to find anywhere else in Andalucía. Combined with nearby Archidona and the landscape between them, it makes an outstanding full-day excursion. TOMA & COE run a private guided day tour combining both towns with lunch at a local restaurant.
The most rewarding way to visit both towns is on a private guided tour. Public transport connections are limited and the landscape and history between the two towns, including the Lover’s Rock and the views across the olive groves, is best experienced with a guide who can bring it alive. TOMA & COE offer a full-day private tour from Málaga or the Costa del Sol, including visits to both towns, a gentle walking tour of Antequera’s Old Town, and lunch at a recommended local restaurant.
Reviews
This was our second time to tour with TOMA & COE, and once again they did not disappoint us. We did the Twin Olive Town Tour. We especially enjoyed visiting the small towns and not being surrounded by tourists… and learning more about the people and the culture.
