About the tour
We take the short journey by boat to Morocco from Tarifa, and once in Tangier (which is one hour behind Spain) we will have a local guide to escort our group for comfort and ease of passage. Most of the tour is done on foot (a total of approx. 3 miles) so please wear comfortable shoes. In addition, please make sure you have a valid passport or visa if necessary.
TOMA & COE will shield you from the tourist trappings of this bustling destination, instead taking you into the authentic heart of a fascinating North African coastal city with a fabulously rich cultural heritage. Whilst we avoid all the less desirable souvenir shops, you will have ample opportunity to purchase typical local goods, should you desire.
While we are in Tangier you’ll have the opportunity to visit aromatic food and spice markets, beautiful artisan weaving factories and wander around the hidden alleyways and busy plazas that make Tangier the atmospheric, memorable city that it is.
We may also visit the American Legation, the Jewish Cemetery, the Weavers Market where local men weave on traditional looms. A wonderful place to pick up superb fabric, bed-spreads and throws. Saint Andrew’s church, an Anglican church that contains a wonderful array of culturally sensitive details and treasures. Before the main altar one can read the Lords Prayer written in Arabic and the hymn boards are decorated with the Jewish Star, a present from the Jewish community on Tangier. It’s a huge testimony to the religious tolerance and unity of the city’s myriad citizens (Itinerary varies according to walking ability, day of the week, time of the year but we always endeavour to show our guests as much of Tangier as possible).
You will have the optional extra to have lunch on the roof terrace of an exclusive boutique hotel; The Nord Pinus as well as having time to wander through the traditional food markets and time to photograph. We explore the fruit & vegetable markets, the fish and meat markets as well as a tiny stall that sells woven baskets.
