Moguer – the land of light, strawberries and adventure

There is a softness to Moguer that cannot be hurried. It lies low and sunlit amid the strawberry fields of Huelva province, a place where history walks quietly beside poetry.

At first glance, Moguer may seem modest. But with time, and the right company, it reveals stories hidden beneath the whitewashed walls and ochre facades. This is the town that gave us Juan Ramón Jiménez, the Nobel Prize-winning poet who saw the world through the eyes of Platero, his beloved silver donkey.

“tan blando por fuera, que se diría todo de algodón”

“so soft to the touch that he might be made of cotton.”

His house is now the Casa Museo de Juan Ramón Jiménez. Walk the same narrow streets, breathe in the citrus trees, and the Andalusian world he wrote of begins to take shape around you.

But Moguer is not only the home of poetry, it is also one of the true departure points of global history. The Monasterio de Santa Clara, where Columbus gave thanks for his safe return in 1493, has a sculpture of the explorer in a cloister.

Before heading to the coast, enjoy a slow lunch featuring local condado wines and produce from the nearby huertas. In spring, strawberries reign supreme. In autumn, the sweet scent of figs fills the markets. Local restaurants serve up fried fish, grilled pork, and seasonal vegetables with unfussy excellence.

La Rábida

Muelle de las Carabales – life size replicas of the ships Columbus set sail on, and discovered the ‘New World’.

Just beyond the town, in a cluster of marshlands and estuaries, stands La Rábida Monastery, a place of worn bricks and Franciscan stillness. It was here that Christopher Columbus found shelter, counsel and the spiritual support he needed to plan his voyages.

Just below, visit the Muelle de las Carabelas, where full-scale replicas of the Niña, Pinta, and Santa María sit moored in a shallow harbour. Walk their decks, peer into cramped cabins, and reflect on the audacity of those who sailed west into the unknown.

Why choose TOMA & COE to guide you?

With a TOMA & COE guide, these places speak more clearly. The poet’s words gain texture, the breeze off the Atlantic carries stories in every gust, and the local flavours gain in strength. Moguer is not a grand destination; it is a gentle one.

Let us show you a side of Andalucía that doesn’t shout but sings softly. Carry with you the spirit of Platero, the gentle donkey who gave voice to Jiménez’s vision of a slower, more tender world.

“…lo dejo suelto, y se va al prado, y acaricia tibiamente con su hocico, apenas rozándolas, las florecillas azules, rosas y gualdas…”

“…I let him loose, and he goes to the meadow and gently brushes the blue, pink and yellow flowers with his soft muzzle…”
