Al-Andalus: Moorish Spain with Jason Webster
Discovering the History and Legacy of Moorish Spain An exclusive journey led by historian and author Jason Webster
Al-Andalus: Moorish Spain with Jason Webster
Between 711 and 1492, a civilisation flourished in southern Spain that the rest of Europe was still, in many ways, catching up with. Al-Andalus was the most culturally sophisticated corner of the medieval world, a place where Muslim, Jewish and Christian scholars worked side by side, where Greek philosophy survived when it had been forgotten elsewhere, where music, medicine, mathematics and architecture advanced at a pace that would not be matched in the rest of Europe for centuries.
Its physical legacy is all around you in Andalucia. The Mezquita of Córdoba. The Alhambra of Granada. The Reales Alcázares of Seville. But monuments only tell part of the story. Understanding what they meant — and what was lost when Al-Andalus fell — requires a guide who has spent a lifetime inside the subject.
Jason Webster is that guide. An Oxford-trained Arabic and Islamic historian and the bestselling author of fifteen books on Spain, he has spent decades uncovering the threads of Moorish culture that run through everything from flamenco to Spanish cuisine to the architecture of the cities you will walk through together. On this tour, he does not simply describe what you are looking at, he makes it speak.

About Your Host
After graduating in Arabic & Islamic History from Oxford, Jason Webster moved to Spain, where he discovered first-hand the marvels of Al-Andalus. The event changed his life, and he subsequently became a best-selling author whose work is focused almost exclusively on Spanish themes. Fifteen books later, and with over a million words in print, he continues to be fascinated by a culture which never ceases to reveal new treasures and mysteries.
His book Violencia: A New History of Spain is recommended reading before the tour. It is the best single volume for understanding the country’s past and present in full. On the road, his commentary moves effortlessly between the sweep of dynasties and the telling human detail: the caliph who built a palace to impress an ambassador, the philosopher whose work survived only because a scribe in Toledo copied it in time.
Jason Webster is delighted to lead our guests though the wonders of Al-Andalus. As we walk around the medieval hearts of these three emblematic Andalucian cities – Cordoba, Seville and Granada – his commentary will bring to life the riches of an ancient world which has much to teach us about our own.

Frequently Asked Questions
Al-Andalus: Moorish Spain with Jason Webster is a 6-night private small-group tour of Córdoba, Seville and Granada, led by historian and bestselling author Jason Webster. The tour explores the history and legacy of Moorish Spain, from the founding of Al-Andalus in the 8th century to the fall of Granada in 1492, through expert-guided visits to the Mezquita, the Alhambra, the Reales Alcázares, the Medina Azahara and other key sites, alongside a flamenco show, Arab baths experience and Moorish and Jewish cuisine.
Jason Webster studied Arabic and Islamic History at Oxford before moving to Spain, where he became a bestselling author of fifteen critically acclaimed books on Spanish history, culture and society. His work has been published in over twenty countries and he has appeared in BBC documentaries and presented programmes for BBC Radio 4. He is widely regarded as one of the foremost English-language authorities on Moorish Spain and the legacy of Al-Andalus.
‘Duende’ is the quality of authentic flamenco, often described as a force, a spirit, or a deep emotional intensity that arises in a live performance when everything — the singer, the dancer, the guitarist, the room, is perfectly aligned. It has roots in Moorish and Gypsy musical traditions. On this tour, Jason Webster gives a dedicated talk on the Art of Flamenco and the mystery of duende before an intimate flamenco performance with reserved seating.
The Medina Azahara — Madinat al-Zahra — was a vast fortified palace city built by Caliph Abd al-Rahman III on the outskirts of Córdoba in the 10th century, intended to rival Baghdad and Constantinople. It was destroyed less than eighty years after it was built and lay buried under the earth for nearly a thousand years. Excavations have revealed palatial reception rooms decorated in extraordinary carved marble and stone. The site became a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2018. It is included in the Córdoba portion of this tour.
Arab baths (hammams) were a cornerstone of daily life in Al-Andalus, functioning as social spaces, places of ritual purification, and architectural showcases. Several cities in Andalucia have restored hammams modelled on the medieval originals, using sequences of hot, warm and cold pools in arched spaces that evoke the atmosphere of the Moorish era.
