Mr Hendersons Railway"One of the most picturesque train journeys in Europe", as described by Michael Portillo for the BBC’s Great Continental Railway Journeys.
TOMA & COE was actively involved in making this TV programme, with one of our guides escorting Mr Portillo along the route and informing him about the fascinating history of the line.
Now we invite you to take a journey “through the picturesque countryside of such a verdant mountain range”.
- Discover the fascinating story of the Andalucian railway built by Victorian Englishman Mr Henderson
- Journey through some of the most stunning scenery in Southern Spain
- Indulge in some excellent food and wine along the route (not included)
- Walking option also available to enjoy some scenic hiking along the route
About the tour
This marvellous piece of Andalucian engineering heritage was, until recently, relegated to memory. But TOMA & COE have helped to revive it, so that we can show you the old glory days of train travel, with a modern twist.
Our day begins at the Hotel Reina Cristina in Algeciras, a magnificent colonial English hotel which dates from the turn of the century. Here we discover why the area held such appeal for Mr Henderson and find out about the many dignitaries who visited. Then we will take you on the railway itself to enjoy the spectacular views and scenery as the train winds its way up through the hills to Ronda.
We will visit the Reina Cristina’s sister hotel, the Reina Victoria in Ronda, perched magnificently atop the cliffs of Ronda Old Town. We will also take a short stroll through Ronda before heading back down to the Costa del Sol.
Departs at 09.00, returning around 18.30.
